Help preserve the memory of America's Heroes of Sept. 11, 2001
"Recently the National Sept. 11 Memorial Foundation sent to the families a “Name Verification Packet”. The object of the packet was to give each family the chance to review how their loved ones name would appear on the Memorial Wall (balcony?, edge?) Upon reviewing it, we realized that we could have our brother, FDNY Captain William F. Bur ke, Jr, Engine 21 listed any way we wanted as long as it wasn't “Captain William F. Burke, Jr.”"
Ranks are not allowed! FDNY Reverend (Father) Mychal Judge will be listed as Mychal Judge (they have stripped a priest of his title); Department Chief Peter Ganci will be listed as Peter Ganci. Firefighter George Cain, as George Cain.
Obviously the list goes on and on. Will you help?
We are hoping that if we bombard them with e-mails, calls, letters we can't be ignored. We have asked to meet with the decision makers but have been turned down. Perhaps after they receive thousands of demands for the ranks, they will reconsider.
Here is the contact info:
Joe Daniels, President CEO National September 11 Memorial and Museum joe@national911memorial.org. Phone: 212-312-8800 Fax: 212-227-7931
Please copy us so we can keep a record at: eNews@theBravest.com and ranksmatter@hotmail.com. LETTER EXAMPLE that you may copy, paste and send....Please remember to put your name and address on the letter........
Mayor Michael Bloomberg,
Chairman
National September 11 Memorial and Museum Foundation
Mr. Joseph Daniels,
President/CEO
National September 11 Memorial and Museum
Why aren't the ranks of those killed in the 9/11 terrorists attacks being included on the memorial wall at the National September 11th Memorial in New York City? We are told it is because the Memorial Foundation Board, chaired by NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, believes such “distinctions” would cause visitors to mourn the death of the plane's captain or a fire captain more than the death of the plane's passengers or the civilian the firemen was trying to rescue. To Mayor Bloomberg and the Board, we say that is not only wrong it is insulting.
It is NOT Mayor Bloomberg's nor the Foundation Board's place to dictate to America what visitors should know of 9/11 when they visit the WTC site in order to control what they should think and feel. It is only our place at this historic place to recognize what happened here; to faithfully preserve and convey the meaning, mag nitude and impact of the attacks. To confront the evil that men are capable of and the destruction and the death they cause and in response, the sacrifice. To bear witness. The memorial must speak to future generations as equally as it does to us. As such, the 406 first responders at the WTC, the military personal at the Pentagon and the flight crews who died in service to their city, their country and humanity, on 9/11, must be identified by the rank they earned with their lives.
The world is coming to the site for 9/11, not a lesson in contemporary notions of political correctness from Mayor Bloomberg and anonymous board members.
History demands it; honor demands it and we demand it.

Brothers and Sisters,
Hello from the Coeur d’Alene Firefighters Local 710 (Idaho)! I’m reaching out to you today, because we need your help. A few years ago, a group of citizens in our city in conjunction with the Coeur d’Alene Rotary Club, approached us with an idea to memorialize all of the fallen firefighters and law enforcement officers in the history of our entire state in the form of a park plaza. Adjacent to this plaza will be a separate memorial dedicated to the fallen firefighters of the WTC collapse on 9/11. The highlight of the WTC memorial is a piece of steel I-beam given to our Chief by the FDNY strictly for this purpose. We unveiled the first portion of this monument last year on 9/11 in a ceremony that touched many in our region and beyond. This project is currently scheduled to be completed by July, with a dedication scheduled for July 11th.
We’ve collected over $100,000 in donations to date, but need to raise approximately $25,000 more. Our own Local has donated $10,000 to this project and is still working to raise more through other fundraising efforts. This is where we need your help. We are of course sympathetic to our nation’s current economic woes. That’s why any amount that your local would be willing to contribute would be greatly appreciated, while donations of $100 or more can be recognized through an inscribed brick in the plaza. Perhaps you’d like to have your Local’s name and number inscribed, or possibly the names of your own fallen Brothers and Sisters. You decide.
Please take the time to click on this link, and watch the short video we’ve produced.
Click for video
We are extremely honored by this project and look forward to its completion. We would be equally honored by your donation and participation in the creation of this memorial plaza. To have your inscribed brick in place for the July 11th dedication, we must receive your order by June 30th. Orders received after that will be set sometime this fall. Your donation, made to the Coeur d’Alene Parks Foundation with 501(c)(3) status, is tax deductible.
Thank you for your time and consideration, and please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

The Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund will be opening programs to New Hampshire firefighters in the State starting in June 2009. For more information please visit www.terryfarrellfund.com or call 516-840-8839 cell.
New Hampshire Firefighters
Our Fund was established after the events of September 11, 2001 to assist firefighters and their families with educational, medical emergency and equipment funding. Our sponsor, Jim Beam Bourbon has created a special label honoring firefighters. Through the sale of this bottle we receive funding that goes directly to the firefighters and their families. To date we have given out over $500,000.00 in cash awards and thousands more in donated apparatus and gear.
Our Fund is staffed and operated completely by volunteers, mostly firefighters. We operate on a 1% to 3% budget, which allows us to give $.99 cents of every dollar collected to the firefighters we support. We currently operate in the east coast from Maine to New Jersey, Chicago and all of California. In 2009 we will be offering assistance to firefighters in New Hampshire. We think New Hampshire has some of the best firefighters in the world and we would like extend our programs to your members.
Please look at our website for information. Or if you wish, contact IAFF locals such as Joe Foley in Buffalo or Tom Ryan in Chicago or Steve Cassidy at the FDNY local 94 or any of the4 hundreds of volunteer departments in New York that have benefited from the Fund. You will find our only mission is to make sure firefighters have what they need at work and at home. I have asked Beam to sell the label in New Hampshire so that we can raise the funding to support the local guys. All money raised in a locale stays in the area so your members would reap a 100% benefit.
If you have questions, please do not hesitate to reach out on my cell at 516-840-8839. We want to start in 2009. We are looking at scholarships and family assistance funding. We would also like to get a suv or van to assist injured firefighters getting to medical treatments or family members affected by injury or loss of the firefighter.

From the Durham, NH FD:
Those of us in the fire service truly form a family with those that we work with. It is a brotherhood and sisterhood that we take seriously. When a member of this extended family suffers a tragedy, we are all affected and mobilize to help that brother or sister. Unfortunately, we can't always fix the problems ourselves. THAT IS WHY WE ARE ASKING FOR YOUR HELP!
Melissa Perusse, our Administrative Assistant, has been a member of the Durham Fire Department since 2004. Herself, her husband John, and their four children are very much loved by us all.
In the early morning hours of February 21st, 2009, John was involved in a tragic snowmobile accident. He was ejected from his snowmobile and into a tree. Fortunately, he was wearing a helmet which saved his life. Unfortunately, he was left with broken ribs, a punctured lung, broken shoulder blade, torn aorta and two broken vertebrae in his back. This has left John partially paralyzed and bound to a wheel chair at this point in time.
Being self-employed, John had no disability insurance. This leaves the family trying to live on Melissa's salary alone. Not only are they suffering the loss of income, but they have had to pay for modifications to their home in anticipation of his return home. There is a good chance that John could walk again through extensive physical therapy, but the family needs help through this financial mountain that are currently facing. Members of our organization are putting together fund-raisers. The first of which will be a pancake breakfast to be held at the Durham Fire Department on April 18th, 2009 from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The cost will be a minimum donation of $5.00 per person.
We realize that some may not be able to attend this event. If you could see it in your heart to make a donation, no matter how large or small, the information is as follows:
Perusse Family Fund
C/o TD Banknorth
Route 125 and Province Road
Barrington, NH 03825
We thank you in advance for your help. Any inquiries can be made to the following members of the Durham Fire Department at (603)-868-5531 or (603)-862-1426:

From Brian Lynch, FIT-5
As the regional dealer for the FIT-5, I am thrilled that our product has helped 3 Long Island fd's save a families home and their personal belongings, twice in the past 5 weeks.
I am also fully aware that this product is not for every scenario. However, in my days as chief, I wish I had the option of using this product.
It is a horrible, almost helpless feeling to be on scene with a job, after you exhaust your "can" waiting for the 1st due. 2-5 minutes will feel like an eternity. Remember, fire doubles in size every 60-90 seconds. This product will "buy you some time". It will not extinguish the fire, but it very likely may help you and your fd save a neighbor's home.
The price of $1295/each, make this device not inexpensive. But with a 15 year shelf life, there is no need to worry about it not being available when needed.
Some fd's in this country are very hard pressed to fund such a purchase. Some fd's have had spaghetti dinners, chicken dinners and other functions to raise the money to make a purchase.
I am extremely proud to be a Volunteer Firefighter for almost 23 years. We have challenges now that were not as prevalent 15 or 20 years ago. I believe that I am bringing a product to the fire service that can help us serve the communities we are sworn to protect.
As some of you know, US Fire Tech has contributed to many charitable causes over the past year. Right now we are assisting the Wounded Warrior Project with an associate of ours. Details are on our website.
See www.usfiretech.com for updates.

From the Visiting Fireman:
What is going on with the 2009 VISITING FIREMAN?
After considerable thought, and input from many VF participants the VISITING FIREMAN will be going to a Bi-Annual publication. There will be no 2009 VF however we will return for the 2010 VF. In the future the VF will be published in Even Numbered Years. Watch for an on line version of the VISITING FIREMAN using 2008 information in the very near future.
Why ?? LuAnn and I both work full time. In 2006 we both had a change in our job responsibilities at our places of employment that now demands more of our time and energy. For myself that meant going from a line fire fighting schedule to a 40 hour work week - a position which is fancy speak for long work days, and many evening meetings. For LuAnn she is more heavily involved with her school and educational programs which of course that also translates into less free time. Oh yes, don't forget our kids. Since starting high school our kids now need a multitude of services including transportation, parent/teacher meetings, and countless other activities. Everything from attending school plays, and concerts, to civic activities.
We cannot express how painful it has been for us to struggle the last two years to get the VISITING FIREMAN out on time. Free time to work on the book is no longer our ally. In past years we had an abundance of free time however in the last couple of years we cannot even make fire musters any more. Our 1923 American LaFrance Pumper and the 1916/1930 American LaFrance/Pirsch City Service Ladder truck both have sat in the garage for almost 4 years without turning a wheel. No parades, birthdays, or muster runs. Unfortunately for both of us retirement is still a few years away.
Over the last 15 years we have heard numerous comments about how the information in the VISITING FIREMAN does not significantly change from year to year. The reality is they are right. Except for minor changes in listing information and mailing addresses a majority of the book remains static from year to year. The area that changes most of course is the photographs.
What many folks do not realize is the VF is a two person operation and contrary to what some have said, the book does not produce a profit from year to year. The book truly is a labor of love. Our reward is the many friendships we have made over the years. Production of the book starts in July of each year. All the listings need to be reviewed and updates as errors are found. Next it take about 10 hours to print out the listings in preparation for the fall mailing. In the mean time envelopes for the mailing must be ordered, inserts coordinated and ordered, and bulk mail permits secured. We also need to secure special postal mailing software that allows us to bar code all mailings thus receiving a significant discount on the cost of postage. This software must be updated annually.
In August and early September we hand stuff all envelopes for the mailing. Again this is done to save costs over mechanical stuffing. It takes us about six weeks working in the evening to stuff over 5000 envelopes. All envelopes must be sorted by their ADC codes and placed in trays prior to mailing. Even though they are bar coded, we still need to apply a certain level of pre-sorting before the trays can go to the post office. The mailing normally goes out early to mid October. Then from the end of October through February 1st we receive listings daily, and update the computer. This takes a few hours each evening six days a week (Monday-Saturday).
Transfer of the data and layout of the book usually takes four to five weeks. Again remember it is only LuAnn and I that do all of this. I work on the layouts for two solid weeks (eight to nine hours a day and taking vacation) and then another two weeks tweaking the layouts. After a final proofing it is off to the printers. Once we receive the books back from the printers labels need to be printed, applied to envelopes, and envelopes stuffed before the mailing. This all takes about two weeks.
Everything we do is geared to keep the cost of the book as low as possible. In the end the cost of the initial mailings, production and mailing the book is about $15.28 per book. What little profit that is made is used as seed money for the next book. We certainly hope everyone understands our situation. Again we will be going to a bi-annual (every two years) book with the book being produced in the even numbered years.
Thank you for your understanding of the challenges we face in producing the VISITING FIREMAN.
Regards, Steve & LuAnn Hansen.

From Amesbury Fire:
In September 2008, Hurricane Ike hit the Houston Texas area. This hurricane devastated the Houston area. Houston Firefighters were on duty in this area when the hurricane hit. When firefighters were able to return home, over 50 of them had nothing to return to.
A local man, John Drew, now a resident of Texas and a Houston firefighter, came to The Amesbury Fire Department and The Amesbury Firefighters Local 1783 for assistance. The Amesbury FD is a small department of 32 members. The members of the AFD reached out to local area departments for assistance. Out of this came “A Night of Mutual Aid”.
Mutual aid is an agreement between local fire departments to give aid when a fire or other disaster occurs. A Night of Mutual Aid will show how this mutual aid agreement can extend thousands of miles.
A Night of Mutual Aid will raise funds for these members of the Houston FD to help them to rebuild their lives. This event will take place at St. Joseph’s Hall in Amesbury, MA. On Saturday December 13th, 2008 at 7pm. There will be a silent auction, music, dancing and food from area restaurants.
Silent Auction items are needed. The area departments are reaching out to you to help make this event a great success. A donation to our Silent Auction from your business would help us to reach our goal.
The Amesbury Firefighters Local 1783 is a non-profit organization and is registered with the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office. Any questions about this event can be directed to Jim Nolan (newman235@hotmail.com) or Chief Jon Brickett of the Amesbury FD at 978.388.1333. Information can also be found at www.amesburyfire.org .

The IOFP is a tremendous resource addition, to which all Photographers may publish their work.
To become active with the IFPA, and to keep up with all of the group's anticipated changes and exciting new membership advantages, please visit our website at http://www.ifpaweb.org. Now is a great time for those who are interested in coming aboard to do so.

James McLoughlin, Commander of CT Statewide Honor Guard, needs your help:
I recently had many personal items stolen out of my car in Portsmouth, NH. 1 item of special concern is my Statewide Honor Guard Commanders Badge and Connecticut Dept of Public Safety ID picture ID card. Its a gold smith & warren badge with an eagle on top and the CT state seal in the center. The words "Commander - Statewide Honor Guard" are also embossed around the badge. The badge was in a leather wallet badge case with the picture ID. Any assistance you might be able to provide would be greatly appreciated.
You can contact Jim at 860-930-3250 or by email at Click for Email.

From Bob Rossi, Cambridge IAFF Local 30
As most know my son Bobby is in Iraq with Lima Company, 3rd Battalion 6th Marine Regiment. The main camp in Falluja had a large fire that affected about 90 Marines in his unit. Fortunately Bobby was not affected because he had been moved about 5 miles down the road to a smaller camp to work with an Iraq police unit. The fire was electrical in nature, not an enemy action, but moved swiftly. Some Marines escaped their tents with just the clothes they were wearing. They attempted to fight the fire and salvage what they could. Some wrapped their tee-shirts around their faces to get by the smoke and heat. The munitions they keep with them became involved and it became extremely chaotic. One Marine attempted to make a fire break with a piece of construction equipment but when the intense heat shattered the windshield he had to give up that idea. No one was badly hurt but all lost something in the fire. About 40 or more lost everything they had. Everything. All their clothes and all their personal items ( pictures, books, ipods, cd's, laptops, movies, etc. ). All the things from home that help pass any down time is gone. Bobby said the service will replace their clothes but not their personal belongings. Obviously, some of these Marines are pretty devastated. There is no place safe in Iraq and these Marines know that and accept the risk to fulfill their duties.
Many of the parents and loved one's of these Marines are reaching out to try to help replace some of the personal items lost in this fire. If you wish to help out, the Credit Union is willing to set up an account for the victims of this fire. The monies will then be directed to "Local Heroes", which is an established group who has been sending packages overseas to our Troops for over 3 years. They will specifically earmark these funds for the victims of this fire. We would like to send things over as quickly aspossible. Donations for this fire fund will be accepted at the Credit Union through July. You can call or if you write a check it must be made out to the "Cambridge Firefighters Federal Credit Union" with the words Fallujah fire on it. Address is Cambridge Firefighters Federal Credit Union, 113 Garden St., Cambridge, MA 02138.
Firefighters and other first responders are exposed to life's tragedies on pretty much a regular basis. We often see people in a time of need. Thanks in advance for your charitable acts whether it be for this or another cause that is close to your heart.
