DEMOGRAPHICS: The town of Arlington is located six miles west of Boston, has a population of over 44,000 people, and an area of 5.58 square miles. Primarily a residential community, the town does have a good deal of stores that line Massachusetts Avenue. Like many Massachusetts communities, Arlington has a rich history. Amongst other things, it was the site of a major battle during the British retreat on April 19, 1775. Other than Route 2, there are no major highways that intersect the town. Arlington is serviced by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority and in addition to bus service, also has the red line of the subway system. There are no hospitals in Arlington, but emergency department services can be sought out in several of the bordering communities.

THE FIRE DEPARTMENT - THEN AND NOW: The Arlington Fire Department responds from three stations staffing three engines, one ladder, and one ambulance. Fire Alarm is still operated at the Public Safety Building at 59 Mystic Street and the frequency of 460.600 has remained unchanged. In 1993, the apparatus roster consisted of mostly Maxim and Pierce. Today the department operates with mostly Pierce equipment. The color scheme has not changed from white/red. Still remaining on the roster from 1993 is Engine 2's 1988 Pierce Dash, Engine 4's 1992 Pierce Dash, and Ladder 2's 1975 Maxim. Engine 3 is currently running with a 1985 Pierce that has the cab of Ladder 1's former 1984 TDA. Engine 2 has been reassigned as Engine 1 and Ladder 2 was refurbished by E J Murphy. Both are in reserve status. Engine 4 still serves as a front line piece. Arlington responds to medical emergencies with a BLS ambulance and Armstrong Ambulance Service provides ALS services.
