DEMOGRAPHICS: The city of Cambridge borders Boston, has a population of over 95,000 people, and an area of 7.14 square miles. The city is very historic and has many well known educational facilities such as Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Radcliff, and Lesley College. Harvard Square is a much visited section of the city with many unique shops and eateries. Other than I-90, Cambridge does not have any highway access points. However, there are a number of major local routes that will bring you to highways in neighboring communities. The city is serviced by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. A city is serviced by a number of bus lines as well as the red line subway service of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. Cambridge has several hospitals with emergency room services including Cambridge City Hospital and Mt. Auburn Hospital.

THE FIRE DEPARTMENT - THEN AND NOW: The Cambridge Fire Department responds from eight stations staffing eight engines, four ladders, a heavy rescue, two non-transporting paramedic units, and two division chiefs. The department also has a number of cross-staffed units such as a technical rescue, hazardous materials unit, and dive rescue. Fire Alarm is still operated at the headquarters station and the frequency of 154.355 has remained unchanged. In 1993, the apparatus roster had a variety of manufacturers with the most recent deliveries being from Pierce. The practice has continued and with the exception of a few specialty units, the fleet is nearly all Pierce. The color scheme has remained white/red. In 1993, Cambridge still has a few two piece companies operating a pumper and a hose wagon. That practice has since been dispanded and the department now has all singe piece engine companies. Still remaining on the roster from 1993 is Engine 4's 1971 Maxim, Engine 5's 1991 Pierce, and Ladder 1's 1992 Pierce, and Ladder 3's 1989 Maxim. Ladder 1 is still in service after being refurbished and the remaining three are in reserve status. Cambridge continues to have a unique response to medical emergencies. The department has two non-transporting paramedic units as well as the capability to transport with their heavy rescue. The units work in conjunction with ALS and BLS units from Professional Ambulance Service.
