DEMOGRAPHICS: The town of Needham borders Boston, has a population of over 28,000 people, and an area of 12.75 square miles. The town is primarily a residential community with an active downtown area. Needham is home to a large industrial park with many high tech firms as well as several television stations. Commuters can access the town through Route 128 as well as through the commuter rail of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. There are no emergency departments within the town, but patients may opt to be transported to one of the Boston hospitals or the near by Newton-Wellesley Hospital.
THE FIRE DEPARTMENT - THEN AND NOW: The Needham Fire Department responds from two stations staffing two engines, one ladder, and one ambulance with a third engine and second ambulance being cross staffed. Fire Alarm is operated out of the Headquarters station and the frequency of 153.950 has changed to 453.075. In 1993, the apparatus roster consisted of E-One, Maxim, and Pirsch. Today the department operates with mostly E-One apparatus. The color scheme has remained white/red. Still on the roster from 1993 is Engine 4's 1989 E-One which is in reserve status. Needham Fire responds to medical emergencies with an ALS ambulance.
