DEMOGRAPHICS: The town of Saugus is located 12 miles north of Boston, has a population of over 26,000 people, and an area of 13 square miles. The town is primarily a residential community with a good deal of shopping plazas and restaurants located along Route 1 in addition to the indoor Square One Mall. Located within the town is a large Mass DCR reservation as well as the Saugus River. Commuters can access the town through U.S. Route 1, which still serves as a major entry point into Boston. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority provides bus service that can bring passengers to a subway station in nearby Malden. There are no emergency departments within the town, but patients may opt to be transported to a number of local hospitals including Melrose/Wakefield.
THE FIRE DEPARTMENT - THEN AND NOW: The Saugus Fire Department responds from two stations staffing two engines and one ladder. Fire Alarm is operated out of the Headquarters station and the frequency of 153.370 has changed to 159.645. A new public safety center was opened a short ways down Hamiliton Street from their old headquarters. In 1993, the apparatus roster consisted mostly of Pierce, which is still true today. The color scheme has changed from white/red to all red. Still on the roster from 1993 is Engine 2's 1985 Pierce, which is in reserve status. Saugus responds to medical emergencies on a first responder basis with Cataldo Ambulance Service providing transporting services.
