DEMOGRAPHICS: The city of Somerville is located three miles north of Boston, has a population of over 79,000 people, and an area of 4.2 square miles. The city is very diverse with a dense residential neighborhoods, commercial zones, and industry. Part of Tutfs University is located in Somerville as is a large freight train yard. Interstate 93 runs through the northern part of the city and the city is serviced by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. A number of bus lines make their way through the city in addition to orange line subway service. Somerville Hosptial provides emergency department services to residents and local patients.
THE FIRE DEPARTMENT - THEN AND NOW: The Somerville Fire Department responds from five stations staffing five engines, three ladders, an on duty district chief, and an on duty deputy chief. Engine 4 is out of service a majority of the time due to manpower shortages. If manpower is available, it is placed into service making the compliment six engines. Fire Alarm is still operated by civilian fire alarm operators at the headquarters station and the frequency of 483.3875 has remained unchanged. They are civil service operators just like Boston. In 1993, the apparatus roster consisted of mostly Pierce, which has remained the manufacturer of choice. The color scheme has changed from white/red to black/red. Still remaining on the roster from 1993 is Engine 1's 1989 Pierce, Engine 2's 1990 Pierce, Engine 3's 1989 Pierce, and Ladder 2's 1989 Pierce. Engines 1 and 2 are still in front line service with Engine 2 being reassigned to Engine 4 after being refurbished. Engine 3 and Ladder 2 are in reserve status. Somerville responds to medical emergencies on a first responder basis with Cataldo Ambulance providing transport services.
