DEMOGRAPHICS: The town of Wakefield is located ten miles north of Boston, has a population of over 25,000 people, and an area of 7.89 square miles. The town is largely residential with a sizable commercial office population. The downtown area is filled with stores and eateries that keep the center busy until late in the evening. Route 128/I-95 has several exits in the town and the MBTA commuter rail makes a stop here. The two large lakes in town are also a largely visited attraction, with many walkers, bikers, and runners utilizing the lake edge as an exercise route. The Melrose-Wakefield Hospital is closest medical facility, which is located in neighboring Melrose not far from the Wakefield line.
THE FIRE DEPARTMENT - THEN AND NOW: The Wakefield Fire Department has signigicantly upgraded it's equipment over the last fifteen years. Apparatus responds from two stations. A brand new headquarters fire station was recently built with the tower from the original station remaining as part of the new structure. This facility is state of the art with fire alarm still being operated by firefighters at this location. The frequency of 46.060 has changed to 483.4375. The department staffs two engines and one ladder. In 1993, the apparatus roster consisted of mostly Mack and Maxim. Today the department operates with all Seagrave equipment. The color scheme has remained white/red. No apparatus that was in service in 1993 remains on the roster today. Wakefield responds to medical emergencies on a first responder basis with Action Ambulance providing transport services.
