DEMOGRAPHICS: The town of Wellesley is located twelve miles west of Boston, has a population of over 27,000 people, and an area of 10.5 square miles. The town has an affluent residential population with several exclusive shopping areas. Babson and Wellesley College make their homes in Wellesley, as does a number of hi-tech firms. There is no direct highway access to Wellesely, although Route 9 intersects the town. Route 9 has access points to several highways in the surrounding communities. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority provides commuter rail and bus service to Wellesley. Patients requiring emergency department service may opt to be transported to Newton-Wellesley Hospital.

THE FIRE DEPARTMENT - THEN AND NOW: The Wellesley Fire Department responds from two stations staffing three engines and one tower-ladder. Fire Alarm is operated by Fire Alarm Operators out of the Headquarters station and the frequency of 46.100 has remained unchanged. In 1993, the apparatus roster consisted of Pierce and Pirsch with newer deliveries coming from Pierce, KME, and Seagrave. The color scheme has changed from all red to white/red. Still on the roster from 1993 are Engine 1's 1991 Pierce, Engine 3's 1976/88 Hendrickson/Pierce (rsv), and Engine 2's 1988 Pierce (rsv). Wellesley responds to medical emergencies in a first responder role with AMR providing transporting services.
