DEMOGRAPHICS: The town of Winchester is located eight miles north of Boston, has a population of over 20,000 people, and an area of 6.28 square miles. Winchester is primarily a residential community with some commercial businesses. The downtown area has a number of stores and other attractions and the Middlesex Fells Reservation takes up part of the town. There are no major highways that have on/off ramps in the town, but commuters can pick up Interstate 93 in nearby Medford, Stoneham, or Woburn and Route 128 in Lexington. The MBTA's Commuter Rail has several stops in Winchester including a large elevated station in the square. Winchester Hospital provides in-town emergency department services to Winchester and other local communities.

THE FIRE DEPARTMENT - THEN AND NOW: The Winchester Fire Department responds from two stations staffing two engines, one ladder, and one ambulance. Fire Alarm is operated by civilian dispatchers out of the police station and the frequency of 483.6875 has remained unchanged. In 1993, the apparatus roster consisted of primarily Mack while today the department operates with mostly all E-One. The color scheme has remained white/red. Still on the roster from 1993 are Engine 3's 1987 Mack CF and Engine 6's 1989 Ford/E-One brush unit. Engine 3 is currently in reserve status as Engine 2 and Engine 6 still serves as a brush vehicle. Winchester responds to medical emergencies with an ALS level ambulance.
