DEMOGRAPHICS: The town of Winthrop is located five miles north of Boston, has a population of over 18,000 people, and an area of 1.63 square miles. The town is a seaside peninsula community that jets out into Boston Harbor. Winthrop is comprised of mostly residential structures with some small business. A number of yacht clubs and beaches are located on the shores. Winthrop has no highway access and can only be entered through local routes. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority provides bus service to Winthrop. Patients requiring emergency department service may opt to be transported to one of the Boston Hospitals.

THE FIRE DEPARTMENT - THEN AND NOW: The Winthrop Fire Department responds from two stations staffing two engines and one ladder. Fire Alarm is operated out of the Headquarters station and the frequency of 483.6375 has remained unchanged. In 1993, the apparatus roster consisted of Maxim, Pirsch, and Pierce with newer deliveries coming from Pierce. The color scheme has remained all red. Still on the roster from 1993 is Rescue 1's 1990 GMC medium duty rescue. Winthrop responds to medical emergencies as first responders with Action Ambulance providing transport services.
