DEMOGRAPHICS: The city of Woburn is located twelve miles north of Boston, has a population of over 36,000 people, and an area of 13.11 square miles. The city has a mix of various types of residences, commercial and high tech businesses, and industrial facilities. There are many stores that line Main Street along with more mercantile businesses spread throughout the city including an indoor mall. Both Interstate 93 and 95 run through the city as does the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's commuter rail. There are no emergency departments within the city, although patients may opt to be transported to hospitals in nearby Burlington or Winchester.
THE FIRE DEPARTMENT - THEN AND NOW: The Woburn Fire Department has seen a significant upgrade to it's equipment in recent times after going a long period without any apparatus purchases. Apparatus responds from five stations staffing three engines, two quint ladders, and one ambulance. A second ambulance is cross-staffed with the crew of Engine 3. Fire Alarm is operated by a firefighter from Station 3 and the frequency of 483.6125 has remained unchanged. In 1993, the apparatus roster consisted of mostly Maxim and Sutphen Today the department operates with all Pierce equipment in front line service. The color scheme of white/red has not changed. Still remaining on the roster from 1993 is Engine 2's 1987 Sutphen, Engine 3's 1990 Sutphen, and the 1988 GMC Haz/Mat. Both pumps are spares while the haz/mat is still in front line service, although it is not a staffed vehicle. Woburn responds to medical emergencies with a BLS ambulance with Action Ambulance Service providing ALS.
