LODD- North Haven, CT Firefighter Matthias "Matt" Wirtz died as a result of injuries he sustained while battling a multiple-alarm fire on December 26th. He was a 22-year veteran of the North Haven Fire Department. CLICK FOR ARTICLE.

Retired Attleboro, MA firefighter Dave Capraro passed away from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. He death is being considered a line of duty death.

Robert "Bob" W Sprague, retired fire alarm operator Salem NH Fire since 1988, died unexpectedly August 4th. Bob began his career with Salem, NH Fire Dept as a part time dispatcher in 1988, became fulltime in 1990, and remained a humble & smiling fixture with the department until his retirement in 2020. During his career, he was awarded for excellence of service, joined the regional haz-mat team, and was the department's photographer. Bob loved photographing fire scenes, nature, wildlife, racetrack events, and especially trains. He was a man that always walked with a smile and never denied a helping hand to anyone he met. Bob is survived by his wife Barbara (Cook) Sprague of Salem, NH, sobs Chuck SPrague of Utah and Robert W,SPrague, JR and his wife Jennifer of Cermont, and grandson Robert W. Sprague III Robbie.

Retired Lynnfield Fire Chief F. Joseph Lingel has passed away. From Lynnfield Fire, Chief Lingel was appointed to the department on 7/1/1971, promoted to Call Lieutenant on 7/24/1981, promoted to Call Captain on 6/28/1984, Appointed as Chief of Department on 6/25/2012 and retired as Chief of Department on 12/31/2013 after serving the Town of Lynnfield for more than 42 years.

Pownal, VT Fire Department Safety Officer Mark Atherton has passed away.

Erie 4, MA longtime member and retired Georgetown Firefighter Bradford Legere passed away.

“Retired Sanbornton, NH Fire Chief Arthur W. Dowling Jr. has passed away. From Sanbornton Fire: "Chief Dowling joined the fire department in 1977 and was appointed Deputy Fire Chief in 1982 and in 1984 became one of the first EMT’s for the fire department. Then in 1985 was appointed Chief of the Department and retired in 1997. A Masonic Service will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at 1100hrs at the Doric-Center Masonic Lodge #20, 410 West Main Street in Tilton, NH. A private graveside service will be held immediately following and a celebration of life will be held from 1300hrs to 1500hrs at the Doric-Center Masonic Lodge.”

Retired Watertown, MA Provisional Chief Anthony M. Gianotti passed away. From the Watertown Fire Department: "Chief Gianotti was appointed to the Watertown Fire Department on May 1, 1969. He was promoted to Lieutenant on April 6, 1976. He was promoted to Captain on August 9, 1979. He assumed the duties of Deputy Chief on April 14, 1984 and was promoted to Deputy Chief on July 17, 1986. He was promoted to Provisional Chief on July 10, 2003. Chief Gianotti retired on February 25, 2004."

Active Duty Police- Cambridge, MA Police Officer Lawrence Hudson passed away unexpectedly. The 24 year veteran was found unresponsive in his home.

Life Honored member Charles "Chuck" Sutton of the Echo Hose Hook & Ladder Company 1 in Shelton, CT passed away. Chuck joined the Echo Hose on May 21, 1962, holding the ranks of Firefighter, Commissioner, and Assistant Chief during his 60 years of service to the city of Shelton.

Police LODD- Massachusetts State Police Trooper Tamar Bucci was killed in a crash on I93 in Stoneham while checking on a motorist on March 3rd. She was 34 years old. CLICK FOR ARTICLE.

LODD- Rocky Hill, CT Fire Captain James Lamarre passed away from job-related cancer. CLICK FOR ARTICLE.

Active Duty Death- Brockton, MA Lieutenant Michael D. Mahoney passed away suddenly on February 14th at the age of 52. He was a 25 year veteran member of the department.

Retired Revere, MA firefighter Edmund B. Foster passed away on February 7, 2022 at the age of 78.

Retired Belmont, MA firefighter and PFFM Trustee Roy Sacco passed away.

From Boston Police- It is with deep regret that Superintendent-in-Chief Gregory Long announces the passing of active-duty Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe. Officer O’Keefe was a 16-year veteran of the BPD who served admirably in several assignments during his career. John will be greatly missed by his friends and colleagues here at the Boston Police Department as we send our heartfelt condolences to his family, and loved ones during this difficult time.

Allenstown, NH Auxiliary Firefighter and Explorer Post 50 advisor Ashley A. O’Brien passed away at the age of 33 from heart complications. CLICK FOR OBITUARY.

Jaffrey Rindge Memorial Ambulance, NH AEMT Chris Sasner passed away unexpectedly on January 30th.

Boston EMS active duty EMT Matthew Clancy, 34, passed away suddenly.

Andover, Mass retired Deputy Fire Chief Lincoln Clark has passed away.

Retired Newton, MA Lieutenant Raymond P. McNamara passed away on January 11th at the age of 79. While working at a fire at an industrial complex on October 25, 1993, Ray was severely injured in an explosion. Though badly burned, Ray survived and endured much over the remainder of his life, becoming an inspiration to many.

Whitman, MA retired Fire Lieutenant Robert Harris passed away on January 9th.

Retired Methuen, MA Deputy Chief Harry Noorigian passed away on December 26, 2021 at the age of 83. A United States Navy veteran, Harry joined the Methuen Fire Department in 1969 and rose to the rank of Deputy Chief before retiring at age 65.



2022 OUT OF NEW ENGLAND LINE OF DUTY DEATH NOTICES

This U.S. Fire Administration has reported the following line of duty death:
North Park Volunteer Fire Protection District, Machesney Park, IL - On Sunday, Dec. 25, 2022, Firefighter/EMT Brian Rehnberg, 50, responded to an activated alarm with carbon monoxide present. After the incident, he returned home. At approximately 2:30 p.m. that day, he was found unresponsive by his wife. He was immediately transported to the local hospital where he was pronounced deceased from an apparent heart attack.

LODD Notice from the U.S. Fire Adminstration:
Pine Haven, WY Volunteer Fire Department - On Thursday, Dec. 15, 2022, after being paged to respond, Training Officer Bruce Lang (68) arrived in his privately owned vehicle at the scene of an individual driving an ATV that had fallen through the ice of a lake. While attempting to rescue the victim, the vehicle that Training Officer Lang was in also broke through the ice. The initial victim was rescued by fellow firefighters; however, Training Officer Lang did not survive.

LODD Notice from the U.S. Fire Administration:
Union Fire and Hose Company #1 of Dover, PA - On Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2022, at approximately 1:23 a.m. Chief Troy M. Dettinger (55) responded to an EMS call at a residence. After the call, he returned home. At approximately 9:30 a.m. that same morning, police performed a welfare check after Chief Dettinger did not report to work. He was found deceased in his home from an apparent heart attack.

LODD Notice from the U.S. Fire Administration:
Baton Rouge, LA Fire Department - On Thursday, Dec. 15, 2022, while on-duty, Captain Walker L. Hill (48) suffered a medical emergency. He was immediately treated and then transported to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital with a suspected Cerebrovascular Accident. He passed away on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2022.

LODD Notice from the U.S. Fire Adminstration:
Kennett, MO Fire Department - On Saturday, Dec. 3, 2022, Captain Robert “Big Rob” Lee Moore (56) responded to the scene of a residential fire. On the morning of Sunday, Dec. 4, 2022, at approximately 6:30 a.m., while at home, he suffered an apparent heart attack and passed away.

LODD Notice from the U.S. Fire Administration:
Washington Township Fire Department in Dublin, OH - On Thursday, Dec. 8, 2022, while attending fire department mandated training in Pensacola, Florida, Firefighter/Paramedic Charles D. Swank (39) suffered a medical emergency. He was immediately transported to the local hospital where he passed away a short time later. The cause of his death has yet to be determined.

LODD- New Tripoli Volunteer Fire Company, MD Assistant Chief Zachary Paris, 36, and Firefighter Marvin Gruber, 59, were both killed while battling a house fire on December 7th.

LODD- From the U.S. Fire Adminstration:
Mapleton, PA Volunteer Firefighter Kurt Keilhofer, 66, was killed on December 6, 2022. Firefighter Kurt Keilhofer was at the scene of a motor vehicle accident on Route 655 in Union Township. While at the scene, another vehicle, not involved in the initial crash, hit Firefighter Keilhofer. He was immediately taken to the Penn Highlands Hospital in Huntingdon, PA, where he was later pronounced deceased.

LODD from the U.S. Fire Administration
Cleveland, OH Firefighter Johnny Tetrick passed away on November 19th at the age of 51. Firefighter Johnny Tetrick responded to a motor vehicle accident on Interstate 90 East. While cleaning up debris from the incident, a vehicle drove around the emergency scene and struck Firefighter Tetrick. The driver then fled the scene. Firefighter Tetrick was immediately rushed to the hospital where he pronounced deceased. The driver that hit him has been apprehended and is in police custody.

LODD From the U.S. Fire Administration:
Captain Basil Pizzuto of the Saddlebrook, NJ Volunteer Fire Department passed ay on November 23rd at the age of 49. Captain Basil Pizzuto was conducting Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) refresher training to fellow members of the department. The following morning, Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2022, while at his full-time job, he suffered a heart attack and coded. EMS personnel arrived at the scene and were able to revive him. He was then rushed to the hospital where he remained conscious and alert. He then fell ill, was taken into emergency surgery, and passed away a short time later.

LODD- The U.S. Fire Administration is reporting the following firefighter fatality: Hopkins, MN Assistant Chief James Scanlon, age 38. Assistant Chief James “Jimmy” Scanlon responded to a fire alarm at an apartment complex. The next day, within 24 hours, he was returning from his regular job when he began to feel ill and pulled off to the side of the road. He went into cardiac arrest and EMS immediately responded. He was transported to the hospital where he passed away on the morning of Friday, Nov. 4, 2022, from a heart attack.

LODD- The U.S. Fire Adminstration is reporting the following firefighter fatality: Calvert Volunteer Fire Chief Everette Watson, age 58. On Thursday, Oct. 27, 2022, during the fire department’s bi-monthly training drill, Chief Everette Watson left the station to go to another station to pick up supplies for the department’s new engine. His son accompanied the Chief to assist with the effort. While at the second station, Chief Watson suffered a medical emergency. Life-saving efforts were immediately performed, but were unsuccessful. Chief Watson passed away from an apparent heart attack.

Westwood, NJ- On Sunday, Oct. 16, 2022, Firefighter Kevin G. May responded as part of a mutual aid assignment to a 5 alarm house fire in Upper Saddle River. The next morning, Monday, Oct. 17, 2022, he was experiencing chest pains and had difficulty breathing. He was immediately rushed to the local hospital where a stent procedure was performed. He was released from the hospital on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2022. On Monday morning, Oct. 24, 2022, Firefighter May was found unresponsive. CPR was initiated and 9-1-1 was called. All efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. The cause of his death was an apparent heart attack.

The U.S. Fire Administration has reported the line of duty death of Captain Kenneth Roy Sott Summerville, SC Fire Department on Monday, Oct. 17, 2022. He returned home after physical fitness training with recruit firefighters. A short time later, he experienced a medical emergency and was rushed to the Summerville Medical Center where he passed away from an apparent heart attack.

LODD- FDNY EMS Lieutenant Alison Russo, a decorated 24-year veteran, was killed on duty after being stabbed multiple times in the neck. CLICK FOR ARTICLE

Barnes City, IA Captain Gary DeCook, 66, passed away after working a detail. He had served the department for 17 years. CLICK FOR ARTICLE.

LODD- Collin Hagan, of the Craig Interagency Hotshots in Colorado, was killed by a falling tree while working at an OR wildfire. CLICK FOR ARTICLE.

Island Park, NY Firefighter Michael Fischer, 38, dies at fundraising event after attending a training session earlier. CLICK FOR ARTICLE.

LODD- Grand Rapids, WI firefighter Riley Huiras (20) fell ill hours after responding to two calls and died in the hospital three days later. CLICK FOR ARTICLE.

LODD- Memphis, TN firefighter David Pleasant died from injuries received in an apparatus crash on August 10. CLICK FOR ARTICLE.

LODD- Apopka, FL Firefighter Austin Duran died from injuries received after he was pinned under a sand trailer at his station last month. CLICK FOR ARTICLE

LODD- Bernalillo County, NM FD Rescue Specialist Lt. Matthew King was on the Bernalillo County Sheriff's chopper when it crashed Saturday. CLICK FOR ARTICLE

South Claiborne, TN Volunteer Fire Department member Roger Estes was struck and killed during a traffic detail near North Tazwell. He had retired from Derry, NH Fire Department prior to moving to TN. CLICK FOR ARTICLE.

LODD- Chesterfield County, VA firefighter Alicia A. Monahan passed away after suffering an accident during swift water rescue training. CLICK FOR ARTICLE.

LODD- Helicopter pilot Douglas Ritchie died when his helicopter crashed that he was piloting during a resupply mission at the Clear Fire in Interior Alaska. CLICK FOR ARTICLE.

Randolph County, NC firefighter Mishael James Auman was shot to death on June 25th and his wife is now charged with his murder. CLICK FOR ARTICLE.

LODD- Philadelphia, PA Lieutenant Sean Williamson was killed and two firefighters were critically injured when a Philadelphia building collapsed after a fire was contained on June 18th. CLICK FOR ARTICLE.

LODD- Maxwell, TX Assistant Fire Chief Jonathan Coco and his brother, Hunter, were killed when their brush truck rolled over while returning from a wildfire. CLICK FOR ARTICLE.

LODD- Linn County, KS firefighter Josh Haynes has died from the injuries he suffered while battling the medical facility fire in Pleasanton on June 20th. CLICK FOR ARTICLE.

LODD- Polk County, FL Fire Rescue Engineer/Paramedic Douglas Clemons died while on duty at Fire Station 27. CLICK FOR ARTICLE.

LODD- Hollywood firefighter Chris Allen suffered a fatal heart attack shortly after his 48 hour shift ended on June 6th. CLICK FOR ARTICLE.

LODD- Sparta Township, IN firefighter Terry Cassidy fell ill while on an EMS call and was rushed to the hospital where he died two days later. CLICK FOR ARTICLE.
